To Denmark across the Baltic Sea
June 4, 2008
Unity Line yacht the Sharki with its youth crew came back to Szczecin from the Second cruise to Copenhagen. On the cruise to the capital of the Kingdom of Denmark the young sailors with captain Cezary Wolski keeping an eye on them had set out on Thursday May 29th, . They came back to Szczecin on June 3rd. It was the second cruise with student crew onboard. For the first time the Sharki set out on May 15th. The route of the cruise went through Świnoujście, next to Sassnitz and Arkona Cape towards the Sund strait to Copenhagen. - We had a favourable wind. The sea was calm. There was neither storm nor squall. The yacht was doing great - says Maciek Czajkowski. - We could learn what freedom feels like, but also meet interesting people, and sing shanties. The idea for the youth cruises from Szczecin to Copenhagen was conceived after the great success of the Sharki in the Tall Ships' Races 2007 Finals. - The interest of young sailors was so high, that together with Unity Line we have decided that the sea adventure must be continued- says Cezary Wolski, the captain of the yacht. - It appeared that it is a great way for the youths to gain experience in sailing on the sea. These kind of cruises also teach them independence and responsibility for themselves and others.
This year the chance to experience the sea adventure was offered to another group of 24 young sailors (divided into three groups). To sign on to the Baltic cruise the volunteers had to be over 15 (but not older than 25), prove their sailing skills, courage and willingness. The six-day-long cruises were one hundred per cent sponsored by Unity Line. In exchange for that, the young sailors had to prepare the boat for the cruise by themselves. Polishing and painting the yacht in a hangar took them a few weeks. It was a really hard work. The Unity Line Sharki is 4.3 metres wide and has 80 square metres of sails. The yacht is large and comfortable. There is a spacious mess and 12 berths. There were eight young members of the crew, supported by experienced sailors. Some other attractions were waiting for the sailors in Kopenhagen.
- On the spot we washed the boat and went sightseeing. You can really feel that Kopenhagen is a port. We saw the market-place and visited the fascinating Christiania district. We had the most fun in Tivola amusement park. The Sharki cruise to Kopenhagen is an extraordinary experience both on the sea and on the land - refers Rafał Kaczmarczyk. On the third and last cruise, Sarki will set out on June 5th.
